A Simple Corkscrew

By J L Winther

My favorite gadget at the moment is a simple corkscrew. It is about the size of a tube of mascara and will easily fit in a pocket, pocketbook or glovebox.

There are many different types of corkscrews. Some have levers. Some pump air into the bottle to loosen the cork. But the corkscrew that I prefer is a plastic apparatus with a long screw attached. It has a plastic cap with a circular hole in it.

These corkscrews are inexpensive, easy to find and easy to use. Simply open the corkscrew and insert the screw into the lid until it's snug. This forms a cross with the screw pointed downward and a handle made from the lid to grasp at the top.

Position the screw in the center of the cork, apply pressure and turn the screw deeply into the cork. Then steady the bottle with the arches of your feet, hold the neck of the bottle with one hand and twist and jiggle the cork out with the other hand.

I've never found a substitute cork for wine that I liked. But if you wet the cork, turn it upside-down and push it back into the bottle it will be easy to remove again. Ideally, everyone should have a friend or two to help finish the wine in one sitting.
