Are Website Affiliate Ads Always a Good Idea?
By Jl Winther
Originally I was eager to set up affiliate ads on my website, contemplating potential earnings from clicks to the ads. However, my websites only receive a small number of hits each week. Therefore, having affiliate ads does not work to my benefit. I believe removing the affiliate ads was the correct decision for my websites for the following reasons. • The affiliate ads were based on the relevant tags that describe my online stores. Therefore, those ads that appeared were generally competitors' ads. They contained products that directly compete with my product line. For instance, my t-shirt line was being undercut by affiliated ads for cheaper, lower quality t-shirts available at competitors' online stores. Obviously, that did not help my sales. • Affiliate ads for products that were not in direct competition with my products, still created website exits or leaks. The ads detoured visitors away from my websites prematurely and shuttled them away from making purchases at my stores. Competition is everywhere. It's not a good idea to voluntarily provide an open doorway leading directly to the competition. • Site counter statistics for my sites revealed that potential customers tend to visit more pages and browse longer now, without the additional exits engineered and provided by affiliate ads. • There was practically no money being credited from affiliate ad hits due to the modest number of visitors. The potential for making money by turning visitors to customers is much better than the potential of making money through affiliate ad clicks on a lightly visited website. Those are the reasons why I don't think having affiliate ads is a good idea for my websites. What do you think?

The web page is your precious real estate. You can use it to display and promote the products you sell or rent it for less to ads. This is all the space you have to catch your visitor's eye in 4 seconds or less. What do you want them to see? Good intel. Frederick

Thanks Frederick. Maybe I'm on the right track.
I agree, if you're monetizing via e-commerce then obviously there's no need to run ads.

It sure took me a long time to realize that. Thanks for your time to comment!
I disagree with not running affiliate ads; however, the type of affiliate association does makes the difference. Visiters who stumble upon your site may not be interested in your offering; however, may be interested in an affiliate offering(s) on your site. Residual income from affiliate associaion also indicates you are on the right track.
