Breasts in the Media and Advertising
By Debbie Winther
Breasts are a big source of revenue in businesses for the medical, beauty and fashion industries. There are countless items for sale to help enhance breasts including breast enlargement herbal supplies, breast lift creams, breast lift and padded bras. A young girl may see large breasts as a sign of maturity and stuff her bra hoping to look larger. An aging woman may see sagging breasts and desire a medical based breast lift for a younger look. An overweight woman may desire a breast lift and reduction to look perkier and thinner. In all of these cases the women are using their breasts as a reflection of how they want to be seen by the world. And women are willing to pay for this. Breast augmentation is a million dollar industry. These procedures are expensive and painful, but woman often get these surgeries to have their bodies express how they would like to be viewed by society, whether it be sexy, voluptuous, younger, or perhaps less noticeable. Woman are quite aware that their breasts size and shape can make a difference in the symmetry and appearance of their body. As a result, if a woman is not built with the perfect size or shaped breast it is not uncommon for her to get a breast enlargement, reduction, or lift. In western culture, movies from the 70’a or the 80’s showed a lot more natural looking women even though breast enlargement was available at that time. Media plays a role in society’s view on breasts. More current media often shows women that are stick thin with large augumented breasts, which gives an unrealistic perception to society. Movie stars and popular music singers sometimes have augumented bodies to help try to advance their careers. The harmful effect of this is not all woman are created in the perfect shape, and it leaves some women with unrealistic expectations of what their bodies should look like. Because breasts are a huge source of revenue in businesses for the medical, beauty, and fashion industries we will continue to see ads on how women can improve themselves. Perhaps a bit of self love is the real answer.
