Carving Halloween Jack-O-Lanterns

By J L Winther

Halloween is a great time to entertain children by carving jack-o-lanterns. Kids absolutely love Halloween! The fun begins with a pumpkin shopping trip, where each child can pick out their own pumpkin. Pick up some tea light candles or battery operated lights to go inside the jack-o-lanterns too.

Another thing to consider buying is a pumpkin carving kit which you can find at any craft store. The kits are inexpensive and they contain tiny knives and puncture and scraping tools that are perfect for pumpkin carving. Kits also contain templates of cool funny and scary faces that can be used on the pumpkins. Naturally, those who are artistic may prefer to design their own jack-o-lanterns.

Pumpkin carving is a little bit difficult. First the lid needs to be cut open at a thoughtful angle so that the lid will not fall down inside the pumpkin. The hide is usually tough to cut. Also, the contents need to be scooped out.

If you're carving pumpkins with kids, preparing the pumpkins to be carved is a task that should be done ahead of time. Otherwise, overly-excited kids will get very bored waiting for their turn to be hands-on with their pumpkins. You might want to prepare the pumpkins a day ahead and refrigerate them until carving time with the kids.

Small children will not be able to carve the pumpkins themselves, but they can draw a face or select a template and tape it to the pumpkin. Then they can puncture along the lines of the drawings with a push pin, small nail or puncture tool to mark where the pumpkins should be carved.

Next have them remove the taped drawings and apply a smear of flour over the puncture holes to make the dotted lines more easily visible for carving.

Carve the pumpkins, light them up and be sure to take a snapshot of the children holding their jack-o-lanterns as a keepsake.

If you're thinking of doing pumpkin carving as a craft with children this year, consider "Go Green for Halloween" as a theme. For instance, a watermelon is quicker to scoop and prep and much easier to carve than a pumpkin.

For a super quick & easy craft let the kids make shrunken head jack-o-lanterns out of peppers. Peppers are available in green, yellow and red colors.

Jackomelons and Jillopeppers are quick, easy and fun to make and they make hilarious Halloween decorations that will delight the kids and be the talk of the town.

Have a safe and happy Halloween.

This brings back happy childhood memories! I lived in the USA as a child. Here in the UK, not many people have jack-o-lanterns.
And I would never have thought of carving a watermelon, but why not?
Happy Halloween.

Happy, Brilliant Halloween.

Carving other veggies is a great tip. Halloween is my granddaughter’s favorite holiday and I can’t wait to have fun carving green and red peppers with her. After Halloween we cut up and cook the pumpkin and freeze it to use in our Thanksgiving pies.
