Celebrate Lent
By Jl Winther
Without going into religious specifics, Lent is the period of sacrifice that is observed by Catholics beginning Ash Wednesday and continuing until Easter Sunday. Usually favorite foods are said to be sacrificed and they are not eaten during that period of time. Foods such as chocolate, fats, carbohydrates or sugar are commonly sacrificed. At one time it was a sin to eat meat on a Friday during Lent. Today a person might abstain from meat, candy, pastries or sodas. Some people stop cigarette smoking during Lent. Sunday during Lent is sometimes treated as a day of rest, a day during which the toughest sacrifices may be suspended. The exercise and observance of Lent serves to strengthen a person's faith and willpower as it leads toward personal improvement. If you were not raised Catholic and you have never observed Lent you may have a vague sense of guilt about not participating during Lent. If so, consider this therapeutic suggestion. Do one good thing for yourself and one good thing for someone else each day in observance of Lent. For example, exercise for a couple of minutes each morning, sacrificing your free time as a self discipline. Then put one thing in a Goodwill or Salvation Army donation bag each day during Lent. You may lose that vague guilt you might have been feeling about not celebrating Lent. Your body will become toned, your closets will be stream-lined and others will eventually benefit from your charity. With this two part exercise it's likely that your charitable nature will flourish so that giving begins to feel more natural and comfortable. You may notice you are becoming sensitive to what others might want or need without being told or asked. Ironically, sacrifices made during Lent don't end up being sacrifices at all due to the bountiful benefits that follow. That’s why I named this Intel “Celebrate Lent” rather than “Observe Lent.”

Give something of yourself to somebody, rather than giving up something. It's a good concept.
