Choosing a Relevant Article Title

When choosing a title for an article it's important to choose a title that tells what the article is about. This may seem obvious, but as a reader, sometimes I find that an article is not about what the title seemed to suggest. Is the article about drinking or is it about avoiding becoming a victim of crime? Is the article an announcement for an upcoming event or a request for donations? Is it about quitting fingernail biting, manicures, finding peace and happiness or the psychology of addiction? Any subject is a good subject as long as the reader is not disappointed. People no longer read magazines or newspapers from cover to cover and they scan the Internet even more quickly. It takes only a moment for a reader to glance over the title of an article and decide whether to continue reading or find something more interesting to read. If the title of an article is misleading the reader is likely to abandon the article, unless they are surprisingly engaged in a subject they were not expecting. If you title your article when you begin writing, it may be a good idea to look over the article again once you have finished writing it to see if the original "working title" is still the best choice. Once the article is finished, a more relevant title may come to mind. By using a title that tells what your article is actually about you will be much more likely to reach and satisfy compatible readers. |
