Coping with Restless Legs Syndrome

By J L Winther

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a distressing, uncomfortable condition wherein a person has difficulty falling asleep or wakes up during the night due to persistent sensations of jumpy, squirmy, creepy-crawly leg muscles. RLS usually afflicts adults with inconvenient sleeplessness, causing them to feel varied degrees of annoyance, tiredness, stress and exhaustion.

RLS can be caused by physical overexertion. If you suffer from RLS and have recently begun a new or more challenging exercise regimen, the increased exercise may be the cause. In this case, exercise may also give some relief. Try doing a couple of deep knee bends or repeat a little of the exercise that is suspected of causing the problem. Or try pacing a little and stretch moderately. Just a couple of deep knee bends may bring temporary relief and allow sleep.

Another common cause of RLS is caffeine withdrawal. Surprisingly, RLS seems to affect people who generally avoid caffeine and drink caffeine only rarely on special occasions such as dinners at family gatherings. RLS can be caused by drinking only one cup of coffee in a practically caffeine-free person.

RLS does not seem to affect people who drink coffee or tea around the clock. Heavy caffeine users develop a tolerance for caffeine. A heavy caffeine user can sometimes fall asleep immediately after drinking coffee or tea.

If you are a moderate caffeine user and suspect that caffeine withdrawal might be the reason for your RLS, try drinking 1/2 cup of coffee or tea when RLS hits. If the RLS subsides or disappears, caffeine withdrawal can logically be confirmed to be the culprit.

Another possible cause of RLS is the use of over-the-counter sleep aids and allergy medications. If you feel your leg is jumping in the air as you're drifting off to sleep, be mindful of any medications or drugs you may have taken, and consider trying something different next time.

RLS is one of the leading causes of insomnia. RLS research is ongoing, but in the meantime it may be up to RLS suffers to do their own investigating to learn to prevent and manage the discomfort that comes with RLS.
