Count Your Steps for Safety
By J L Winther
When climbing a ladder to paint, change lightbulbs or do repairs it pays to count how many rungs you climb. Many accidents happen when people descending ladders think that they have reached ground level, when actually they are still up a rung or two on the ladder. So if you count that you have climbed up five rungs you can be sure to come back down five rungs safely. Often people get up at night and wander the house in the dark. Instead of turning on lights as they should, they shun the glare and rely on night vision and a small amount of available light from nightlights and stray light sources. Whether you are in your own home or traveling, it pays to know how many stairs there are in a staircase. People become disoriented in the dark and stumble on stairs thinking that they have reached the landing, when in reality they still have a step or two to go. If you know that there are ten steps to get to the landing and five more to reach ground level you will be much less likely to have an accident. Count your steps when climbing and descending ladders and stairs for safety. Obviously, turning on lights is a good safety practice too. Stay safe! |
