How to Capture Smiles in Photos

By J L Winther

If you've ever taken pictures at birthday parties or if you've ever seen school photos or drivers license mug shots you may have noticed that the smiles in posed photos are often stilted, strained and unnatural looking. In candid shots it's easy to recognize smiles on the faces of loved ones. But the posed photos do not look natural and the smiles of loved ones often look stressed. This is because different sides of the brain are in operation for posed smiles versus natural smiles. Happy smiles and put-on smiles are not the same at all.

One trick that I've used with great success with both children and adults is to ask them to spin around once in a circle and quickly repose for the snapshot. As the photographer I will spin around once myself to demonstrate. This amuses and relaxes the subject(s) and usually results in the capture of very natural smiles, the smiles that everyone recognizes, remembers and loves. Try it!

Good idea. It helps remove the fake-ness of the smiles. You can't help but laugh at yourselves when you and your group are spinning around in circles. Sometimes even the smallest idea can be the most successful.
