How to Spot Clean a Wool Sweater By Laney Overland It's a bummer to find a spot on a wool sweater or sweatshirt that you were planning to wear, especially when there is not enough time to take it to the cleaners. If you have an hour or more before the event, an inexpensive can of spray carpet cleaner could come to the rescue. Many carpets are wool, right? Treat the sweater as the instructions on the can of rug shampoo direct. Usually, the directions say to spray the spot and gently rub horizontally across the stain. Then rub vertically across the stain. You should be able to see the stain lightening. Lightly spray the rest of the sweater to blend in the spot cleaning job and hang it to dry. Usually air drying takes about an hour. Finally, fluff the sweater for about 10 minutes in a cool dryer. In a perfect world, the sweater should be clean and ready to wear.
