Iron Hill Park
By Jl Winther of Friends of Iron Hill Park
New Castle County, Delaware Iron Hill Park is a park in Newark Delaware that is rich in history. Iron ore was once mined there and evidence remains today. George Washington's soldiers used the land and are said to have climbed a tower which once stood at the park's highest point to lookout for approaching enemy troops. At the top of the hill is a pavilion and in that vicinity there are interesting memorials and educational plaques about the history of Iron Hill Park. The Mason-Dixon trail runs through it. For a while the park was lightly attended and too secluded to feel family friendly. But with the help and hard work of local government officials, New Castle County police and the newly formed community group, the Friends of Iron Hill Park, the park has recently become one of the most beautiful, well peopled, family friendly parks in Newark and the Friends are always happy to welcome new members. They also appreciate occasional donations of benefactors for the good of the park. Iron Hill Park has a play ground for small children and picnic tables, benches and grills. The park also boasts a new bark park which includes a clean bag dispenser, spigots to provide dogs with fresh water and comfortable mulched cages with benches for socialization of people and their pets. The park has wonderful trails for walking, jogging and biking. Installation of a bike rack is planned. The grounds are maintained regularly with help from the county and many tireless community volunteers. One of my favorite additions to the park is a world class disc golf course. It's the largest ever, designed to use the natural flow of the land without removing any more healthy trees than absolutely necessary. Nestled in the trees are 18 wonderful disc golf "holes" with baskets. Disc golf is a hiking, throwing game and sport that is played with a disc that is similar to a small Frisbee. The disc is thrown and retrieved again and again until it lands in the basket. Iron Hill Park has 300 acres of land and much of it is untouched passive space to be explored. The park is a beauty and I highly recommend a visit.
