Lobotomy
By Debbie Winther
A frontal lobotomy is a dangerous operation that was once used to treat mental disorders, including depression, psychosis and schizophrenia. A lobotomy is a neurosurgical procedure that cuts the connections from the prefrontal cortex. Negative effects that have been caused by lobotomy include incontinence, difficulty speaking and retardation. Lobotomies were banned in the 1950’s. A study shows that in patients that had lobotomies one third were considered cured, one third were the same and one third were worse. This does not reflect a high success rate from lobotomies. It would be safer to embrace less invasive forms of treatment that also have fewer risk factors. There are many forms of less invasive treatment with better success rates. Let’s take the example of depression. Before performing a lobotomy for depression why not try exercise, light therapy, talk therapy, or group therapy. In addition you could try medications for the specific mental disorder. A medical professional and patient could try many of the above stated forms of therapy in combination and it would still be far less invasive than a lobotomy. Lobotomies are no longer performed today in the United States because of the low success rate. In addition, advancements in research have brought better solutions for medical professionals to consider including cognitive therapy, behavior therapy and medication. |
