Stay On the Geocache Trail
By J L Winther of Friends of Iron Hill Park
Geocaching is a a kind of hide and seek hiking game that is enjoyed by people of all ages. Geocachers use a global positioning system (gps) to hide and find containers called caches in parks and in the wilderness all over the world. A gps marks, records and maps the longitude and latitude of a cache. The information it gives is similar to an address with a map for any specific location on earth. Caches are usually plastic containers with lids. They often contain inexpensive small toys and useful items to be traded by geocache finders. Caches also usually include a log book for people to sign to share and describe their experiences. As a new geocacher I have made the same mistake most new geocachers are likely to make, which is leaving the geocache trail too soon. In search of a cache, I have diligently followed my gps arrow in a bee-line down steep slopes, over cricks, through mosquito infested marshes, past wild flowers, stickers and bee hives, and climbed back up large hills only to find that the cache I was seeking was hidden about 20 feet from the top of the trail, a little beyond the spot where I departed from it. Returning from finding a cache has taken me less than half the amount of time it took me to reach the cache. If you find yourself following your gps arrow far from the trail, there is a good chance that you have left the trail too early. So try to remember to stay on the geocache trail as long as you can when searching for a cache. If you'd like to learn more about the sport of geocaching, I recommend that you get started with a visit to www.geocaching.com which is the definitive authority on geocaching. There you can get plenty of geocaching information, select caches to find, and create and keep a record and count of your finds and any caches you may eventually decide to hide. In addition, you can find geocaching picnics and other events to meet and get together with other geocachers.
