Website Music
By J L Winther
When designing a website it's easy to get enthusiastic about making the site all it can be and the decision to add music is an interesting one. It may be only a matter of opinion whether adding music to an online shop or gallery is a plus or a minus. But it seems to me to be a risky choice. Here's why. The playlist takes longer to load on most, if not all computers and the time spent waiting is likely to be annoying. A visitor may wish they hadn't clicked to visit your website. Visitors are gone before the second song. Shoppers and visitors tend to stay at a website for a minute or so and they visit one page or a very few pages per visit. That's how little time there is to make an impression or a sale. Taste in music is a subjective, personal choice and music affects the listener's mood. It doesn't seem likely that one's favorite song will be liked by most people. How many times have you been a captive audience to a family member's or coworker's choice in music? Do you usually like it? People use wireless laptops everywhere, in living rooms, cafes, at airports. An unexpected blast of music when visiting a website can be embarrasing, possibly disturbing others within earshot. If you're selling music or if you're sure a particular selection of music is a positive branding tool for your online store, certainly use it. Otherwise, maybe not. |

I love the idea of adding music to a website, but as you say, it takes so long to download that you could loose your audience! Perhaps in a few years music will be 'instant' - then all we will need to worry about is personal taste.
