Why Does Sugar Taste So Good?

By Debbie & Jl Winther

Why does sugar taste so good? Why are people munching on cookies a short time after they vow to stop eating it?

Your taste buds are designed to respond to foods that cause you to store a lot of fat like ice cream. Foods loaded with sugar and fat help people to get through times of famine. The Average American does not go through times of famine as our ancestors did. This is unfortunately why the best tasting foods tend to make us the fattest.

Sugar tastes good because it was meant for energy and survival. It was not meant to be eaten while watching Survivor on the sofa!

Originally, the sweet sensors of our taste buds signaled humans to want to eat sugar in food. Sugar is energy for the body, important for human survival, and simple sugars are usually a preferred energy source. Sugar often causes humans to eat more food in order to obtain a greater amount of energy for survival. Long ago food was too scarce for humans to over consume and obesity was uncommon.

In American society food is generally plentiful and usually processed for people to eat on the go. Our taste buds desire sweets for survival. So we have the instinct to obtain energy in many forms of sugar including fructose and corn syrup from soda. Sugar with caffeine can become addictive.

Many natural, high carbohydrate food snacks, such as pretzels, have a high glycemic index and they are easily stored as fat. Rice cakes don’t contain a large amount of fat, but they have added sugars and salt, making them a fattening food in disguise.

Humans enjoy sugar. It tastes excellent. This originally evolved to help humans survive hard times and famine. Unfortunately it is causing obesity in American society today. Yes, sugar tastes good, but if it is not eaten in moderation it is much too tasty to be a truly healthy part of our diet.

Yep. Gotta admit I love my sugar. Salt too, unfortunately...

Yep, me too. Thanks.

Although I don't have a sofa nor have I ever watched an episode of survivor, I still think that is an excellent picture to paint and I do agree fully. The only things that I would add are that artificial sugars are just as "bad" -- no, worse, than real sugar, and also that sugar is most harmful when consumed in the absence of more nutritious foods, which is why historically sweets are served after a meal and not in place of one or before it. That is because fibers can trap the sugars and carry them safely through the digestive system, whereas, on an empty stomach the sugars go right into the blood stream, I think. Sugar is a drug.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Hmmm, I didn't know that about rice cakes. Although we don't eat them now, we used to think that they were diet food. Thanks for letting us in on a few tips.
Best Wishes,

You're welcome. Thanks for the read and comment.

And here I thought you were gonna say sugar taste so good because it's not so good for you.

I just forgot to say that sugar tastes so good because it's not so good for you. :)

All you need to do is sit in a doctor's waiting room for one hour and compare the number of healthy looking people to the obese people. It's obvious,America is eating itself into an early grave and/or years of health problems.
Thank you for sharing.
Best wishes.

I agree. Here's hoping we all stay out of the doctor's offices. Thanks, Frederick.

Thanks for the info. I never really thought about why sugar tastes so good. That explains so much.

Now that we know eating sugar directly creates stored fat, we can be much more responsible about choosing whether or not to eat it. Thanks for the comment.

Sugar is a bad addiction. I can sit at the computer and eat 200/250 gram pack of sugar candies without blinking an eye. I think I need a drip feed.
Wishing you all the best.

I can relate to your sugar love. It's not a good idea though. Good luck for a happy future.

I love my sugar and I love my coffee. The two are a great combination for me. I can drink coffee without milk if I have to but never ever without sugar.

I can surely relate to your guilty sugar pleasure!

By the way, a doctor told me, "I'm not going to take your coffee away, but it's so dehydrating that you should drink 3 waters or non caffeine beverages for each cup."

Oops, I do it the other way around 3 caffeine to every water :) lol
