Why Tailgate While Driving?
By Laney Overland
One of my pet peeves is people who tailgate while driving. Why does anyone need to ride my bumper? I drive at the speed limit, but tailgating still happens frequently. Often the tailgater is riding way up high in a pickup truck or SUV that towers over my car. It's impossible that they're having trouble seeing the road ahead, so I can only assume they got a late start and are trying to push me to drive faster. Frequently that type of aggressive driver rides the middle of the road, yielding only at the last minute to oncoming cars. Sometimes, the person doing the tailgating is unaware that they are driving uncomfortably close. Three light taps on my brakes, barely slowing down is all it takes to suggest adding a car length of space to the driver behind, and a polite driver will ease off. Sometimes a tailgater will back off somewhat if I slow down gradually below the speed limit, but they may not be happy about it. I believe that the rule of thumb is to leave one car length of space between your car and the car ahead of you for every ten miles per hour that you're traveling to allow for ample stopping time. When nothing I try works to prevent being tailgated it's fun to have a little car with a wild windshield sprayer. I wash my windshield liberally many times. I have to admit I'm glad to see their hands go up in front of their faces when they initially think that the spray is going to hit them. They put on their windshield wipers too. I wash their windshields and they always back off. No, I'm not perfect. So when I finally find the street that I'm looking for and make my right turn, please remember that two short beeps are much more polite than one long loud blast. Thanks, I'll really appreciate it.

Contributor's Note
I stand corrected. Recently a car drove very close behind me at 25, 30 and 45 miles per hour over a two mile stretch. They put on their wipers four times before turning off at a light, still unaware and tailgating. Amazing.

This is something that bugs me too. Another thing is that when I leave the correct room from the vehicle in front of me someone has to cut into that space so I need to slow down to restore the space.

I know what you mean! I don't like riding uncomfortably close to the car in front of me and I hate cars cutting in quickly like that. People don't walk that impolitely but some seem to have a different standard when they're wrapped inside a car traveling at a high rate of speed. A little courtesy goes a long way. Thanks for digging this one out to read and commenting.
