Winter Pansies Bloom in Snow
By J L Winther
Pansies are garden herbs with beautiful, showy, multi-color flowers that are commonly planted and given as gifts around Easter. Pansies flourish in spring, but they tend to faint and usually can't endure the heat of summer. That's why the name pansy is sometimes used to mean weakling, giving pansies a bad rap. Pansies absolutely love cool weather and they trive extraordinarily well in fall and winter. They look fantastic and amazing in winter, surprisingly blooming even in snow. If you feel that winter goes on way too long, you're prone to cabin fever and in need of cheer, consider planting some winter pansies this fall. Mulch them and they'll bloom all winter long, and be there to greet the early snow crocuses when they finally appear to announce spring's arrival. As a bonus, the pansies will continue blooming through spring, which is not bad for a flower with the weakling reputation of a pansy. |
